Sassy Ever After: Twice the Sass (Kindle Worlds Novella) Page 7
Her mates had laughed at her when she suggested the Fates should do as much. It would make everyone’s life so much easier.
“Knock, knock. Anyone home?” Sylvi called from the front door. “Where are my birthday boys and my favorite daughter?”
“I’m in here.” Nya called from the kitchen. “I sent the boys out hunting this morning. They should be back soon. I wanted some time to get everything set up.”
Sylvi set the cake down on the counter, and pulled Nya into a hug. “I’m so glad my boys found such a beautiful and sweet mate.”
Nya blushed, unused to the plethora of compliments. “Thank you.”
“We’re in here, Kirk.” Sylvi called to her husband.
“Hi, Nya. It’s good to see you. Thanks for having us all over today. I have a few more things to grab from the truck,” he said, holding up a Nesco filled with broasted chicken. “Where do you want me to put the crockpots?”
“I have a bunch of tables lined up on the patio. That should be okay, right?” Nya suddenly felt unsure. She had never hosted a get-together. She didn’t have a clue what was expected. Hell, without the help from Sylvi and Kirk, she wouldn’t even know what to feed the guests.
“That’s perfect! It’s such a beautiful day outside. Relax, sweetie. Everything will be just perfect. Just wait and you’ll see.”
As hard as she tried, Nya couldn’t keep her insecurities hidden. “What if…I’m a spectacular failure? What if the curse is still intact? What if I wasn’t the right mate to break it?”
“Oh sweetie, you are doing just fine. Don’t you worry about a thing. We’ve got everything covered. Wolves are notoriously easy to please. Throw some food and drinks out for them, and they’re good to go. They know how to entertain themselves. As for the curse, you are their true mate. Of that I have no doubt.”
“Thank you for doing all of this for us.” Nya was truly grateful to have Sylvi and Kirk in her life. They’d made her feel like family from the second she had walked through their door.
“That’s what families are for, sweetie. I’ll always be here for you. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call me. Day or night. Even if you just need to talk to someone who will listen.”
Nya had to wipe the tears from her eyes.
“Hey, what’s all this? Why did you make Nya cry?” Taavi asked as he walked through the door.
“You guys weren’t supposed to be back until later.” Nya kissed him on the cheek.
“What can I say? It’s not really a surprise party when the whole pack knows and we can smell the food from miles away.”
“Where’s Tad?”
Taavi swiped his finger across the frosting of the cake, taking a small lick before offering the rest to Nya. “I chained him up in the garage so I don’t have to share my cake with him.”
“Haha. Funny. Seriously, where’s your brother?” Sylvi asked.
“He’s coming. You know he’s slower than me.” Taavi winked at his mom.
“Well, since you boys are back early, you can go help your father unload the truck while Nya and I finish things up in here.”
Nya loved watching Taavi goof around with his mom. Sylvi had so much love for her boys, Nya found herself wondering what her life would have been like if she’d had a mother like Sylvi.
“There’s no point in getting hung up on could-haves, would-haves, and should-haves. Let’s just be thankful for all we’ve been given, and have a good day with our mates and family.”
Nya knew her wolf was right. She needed to let go and enjoy the moment. Embracing the moment like her wolf had suggested, Nya padded over to Taavi and his mother to join in the laughs.
Epilogue
Sylvi and been right all along. The party had turned out far better than Nya could have ever expected. Best of all, it was free of the Fae drama that she’d become accustomed to over the years. There was no pomp and circumstance, no petty court bullshit, no insults and accusations being flung from one rich, bored family to another. Instead their home had been filled with friends and family who wanted nothing more than to share in the joyous occasion and wish the trio well.
Everyone kept a close eye on Tad and Taavi as the hour of their birth approached, never saying a single word regarding their unspoken fears. Instead they prayed for her mates’ curse to be a thing of the past—hoping it wouldn’t rear its ugly head, but being on standby to help no matter what the outcome might be.
Cheers erupted, and pats on the back were plentiful as the clock struck 12:01 am without either of them sprouting horns or going insane. Nya said a silent ‘thank you’ to the powers that be and sucked in a deep breath, letting the fear and tension she’d been holding float away on a lengthy exhale. She had no idea what she would have done had the curse not been broken.
Tad and Taavi had known of her fears and had done everything they could to help alleviate them, but what they didn’t quite understand was that, up until the day she’d met them, she had never really lived. She had been waiting for her life to start. Waiting for something spectacular to happen. Praying for someone to find her attractive enough to sweep her off her feet.
With her mates, she’d found all that—and so much more. She’d found the love she’d only dreamed of experiencing and a future that she truly looked forward to living.
